Castle of Myrina, Lemnos island, Greece

Castle of Myrina is situated close to the city of Myrina in Lemnos island. It is one of well preserved castles of Aegean Sea in Greece. It is originated from the Pelasgic Period of Lemnos after 900 b.C., as everyone can see the remains of pelasgic walls there, which were completed by Athenians in 450 b.C.. After many years and specifically in 1186, the Emperor Adronikos built the Bezantine Castle in order to protect the city of Myrina by invaders. There were many restorations on the walls such as in 1207-1214 by Ficola Navigajoso and in 1361 by John E Palaeologist.

The site of castle is impressive, as it is a natural fortified peninsula entering deeply into the sea that forms two bays from its north and south side, the Turkish and the Roman Galo, which are, in particular, the first safe anchorage for the docked ships. The castle was built with a specific way so as to prevent and make very difficult for enemies to have access there. As from the north, west and south side of castle, it is surrounded by the sea and there were large rocks, towers and obstacles that prevented the invaders to ascent and enter into castle. Also from the east side that was connected with the land, there was a huge wall with two entries, which were reinforced by a lot of fighters, so that it was very difficult the castle to be violated. It is important to add that there are buildings there from all historic periods, such as pelasgic, classic, buzantine, turkish and even though of the german dominance.
Today the castle is one of the fabulous sights of Lemnos island with many tourists gathering there and enjoying the view of Myrina and the beautiful sunset near and behind of Athos mountain. Also if you are lucky, you can meet some deer, as there is a herd of deer living freely in the castle. The castle is illuminated at night offering a beautiful sight.
