Panagia of Tinos, Greece

Panagia of Tinos is in central position in Tinos island and many faithful christians get together there every year in order to pray. The church has a miraculous icon with Panagia in Annunciation, which is covered with priceless stones and jewlleries. According to folk tradition, a monster had a vision, where Panagia asked her to find her miraculous icon. She saw this vision three times so that she decide to visit the Bishop of island to transmit this vision. Furthermore she thought that some excavations was appropriate to be set up in George Doxara 's field in order to find the icon. So with bishop's order the excavations were started, but there was not any result. After some time they ceased the excavations temporarily. They started their operations again in a few months later. On January 30th in 1823 the icon was discovered by a worker known as Dimitris Vlassis, who broke the icon separating it in two parts between the Panagia and Archangel. After this discovery, the local authorities decided to set up an impressive church with murbles of Dilos. The church had been constructing for 50 years, because of financial difficulties. Many faithful christian offered large sums of money so as to build the church. It was ready in 1880. It is important to add that the church has some pieces of warship Elli, which was bombarded by Italian forces in the start of two world war, some miles away from Tinos island.
